Calculating fees isn't difficult, but can seem a little intimidating because Building permit fees are based on the type of work involved in your project. If it's a large job, there's more for our plans examiner and inspector to review and inspect. If you're doing a smaller project, there's less to review and inspect resulting in a lower permit cost.
When you submit for your permit, any review fees are due up front for that review. That includes the planning site plan review (if applicable), the engineering (Development Services) site plan review (if applicable), and the building plan review (if applicable). All other fees are due when the permit is ready to be picked up or issued.
Here we'll try and cover every possible senario for permit fees. (Note: Not all fees apply to every project, and this does not include mechanical, electrical, or plumbing permit costs. Please visit those pages for those fees)

If your project is commercial, or involves the exterior of a residential property, please check with the Planning Department for additional reviews and fees to see if they apply. Sometimes these reviews must be completed before applying with the Building Division.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
If your project is residential, and consists of an addition or detached structure (such as a new sunroom, garage, shed, patio cover, exterior stairs, anything that covers more land), a site plan review by our Planning Department and Development Services Department is required to check that nothing is built or constructed within your setbacks or over any easements (over water lines, sewer lines, etc). Please check their pages for their review fees.
The building permit fees are calculated from the valuation of the project. To figure the valuation, we use the square footage of the addition/building. Current values are as follows:
| Living Space (Dwelling) Area | $ 101.95 per square foot |
| Garage Area | $ 39.61 per square foot |
| Carport Area | $ 19.80 per square foot |
| Deck Area | $ 19.80 per square foot |
| Demolition | $ 1.00 per square foot |
| Porch Area | $ 19.80 per square foot |
Once you have figured the valuation of your project, please refer to our "Valuation Fee Table" attached at the bottom of this page. For example: If you are adding a 20x22 garage onto your existing house, your total square footage is 440 square feet. Since it's a garage valued at $39.61 a square foot, your valuation is $17,428.40. Our "Valuation Fee Table" shows that the permit fee will be $252.19, the plan check will be $163.92, and state surcharge will be $30.26, for a total of $446.38 for your permit, plan review and all building inspections.

If your project is commercial (other than fire sprinklers/fire and life safety), or if your project is all interior residential (not seen from the outside), you will need to provide us with the valuation (the valuation figure should include any architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation devices and equipment, and the contractors' profit if a contractor is involved.) Use the "Valuation Fee Table" attached at the bottom of this page to find your fees.
