Attend a Field Hearing in your area!
The State legislature has the responsibility of redrawing legislative and Congressional district boundaries. In order to facilitate the redrawing of district boundaries, the House and Senate Committees on Redistricting have developed a bi-partisan plan to travel throughout the state to gather public input from Oregonians about their communities, neighborhoods, and relationship to their legislative district. Citizens are asked for assistance with the process of collecting information.
The Committee members and other legislators are eager to hear suggestions and reasons for moving legislative and Congressional district lines. The responsibilities, deadlines, and criteria for redistricting are specified in Article IV (6) of the Oregon Constitution and ORS 188.010. The criteria include maintaining contiguity, equal population, existing geographic or political boundaries, communities of interest and connection by transportation links.
The criteria also require that no district be drawn for the purpose of diluting the voting strength of any language or ethnic minority group. The redistricting requirements can be viewed on the Redistricting Web site: http://www.leg.state.or.us/redistricting/. On the Web site you will also find maps of current legislative districts, 2010 Census data, and links to the House and Senate Committees on Redistricting Web pages.
The State of Oregon Redistricting Web site has an interactive map and complete itinerary for the statewide field hearings. The members of both the House and Senate Committees on Redistricting will be in the Metro area on April 8th and 9th. The Committees will be on hand to listen to public testimony on redistricting in Washington, Clackamas, and Multnomah counties. The full schedule for the Metro public hearings is included as an attachment on this page.
If you are unable to attend a field hearing and would like to submit comments or testimony to the Committees, you may do so at any time and it will be added to the public record. Written testimony may be mailed or e-mailed to:
