1020 Main Street - W.B. Stokes Motor Company Building

This is a sizable, two-story building currently used as an office building. To accommodate the change in use, all of the windows have been replaced and the ground level openings, which included garage bays and showroom display windows, have been altered. All of the windows and doors are contemporary extruded aluminum windows with reflective glass. The windows and doors on the first floor have canvas awnings. The parapet wall on the front (west) facade is broken by triangular and square projections, giving the building a faint hint of Mission style architecture. The interior has been completely remodeled. The building faces west on Main Street and backs up to the railroad tracks.

Statement of Significance: This building was constructed in 1923 by Henry and Bertha Boguslaski and Gustav and Anna Engelbrecht, who were cousins. They leased it to the W.B. Stokes Motor Company, an early Oregon City auto dealership. Thus began a long list of dealerships at this site, including Logan Chevrolet (1928), Taylor Motor Company (1934), Parelius Motors (1941), Oregon City Motor Company {1953), and most recently, the Webster-Wolford Ford dealership (still at this site at the time of the 1983 survey). The building has since been renovated by the county for use as offices. Although the building clearly resembles it former self, the alterations destroyed some of the most character-defining features. The building, therefore, is no longer eligible as a contributing resource in a historic district.
