108 6th Street - Riverside Auto

This is a one-story, clay tile building covered with stucco which sits on the southeast corner of 6th Street and McLoughlin Blvd. The northwest corner of the building is designed to created a curvilinear approach to the original entrance; the roof slopes of the building protrusions extend downward and are covered with curved metal plates creating canopies over the entrance. The windows on the north and west elevations (except for one) have been covered over.

Statement of Significance: This building was constructed in 1933 as the Riverside Auto garage and showroom on property owned by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company (which they had purchased in 1929 with the notion of constructing a new office). The 36' x 70' stuccoed, hollow clay tile building was constructed by Junken and Mills, contractors, for a cost of $2500. Apparently the auto dealership left, because in 1939, the telephone company did move into this building when automatic switching equipment was installed and dial phones were offered for the first time. The telephone company occupied this space until a new, fully modern and computerized facility opened on North Third Street in December 1974. The building currently houses a portion of the Larry Morton Transmission Service operation. Due to irretrievable losses of integrity, the building is no longer eligible as a contributing resource in a historic district.
