500 17th Street - W.G.H. Kreuger House

Statement of Significance: This house was built by W.G.H. Kreuger. Active in the community, Mr. Kreuger was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and sat on (directed?) the Building Committee when the present church was built at 8t and Monroe Streets. He was also the owner of Kreuger Lumber, which is still located on Washington Street adjacent to Abernethy Creek. He was a city commissioner from 1934 to 1937 and mayor from 1939 to 1945. A long-time resident of the neighborhood says that the Englebrecht family lived in this house. The Englebrechts ran Green Point Dairy on the site of Kelly Field. This house maintains an important position geographically, although overshadowed by commercial/industrial uses.
