622 Main Street - Price Brothers Store

This is a one-story commercial building that has been substantially altered. According to the 1983 survey, evidence was found that indicated its original appearance included stucco siding and a rounded northwest corner. Today the building is sided with T-l-ll siding. The prominent features is a fake mansard roof canopy above the storefront windows, also sheathed with T-l-ll. There are two separate retail spaces, each accessed by a recessed entry. The smaller bay, on the south, currently has a canvas awning over the entire storefront area. The larger bay, which includes approximately the northern two-thirds of the building, has full-width display windows across the front and a long expanse of display windows along the north elevation. Brick accents the bulkheads and entryways. The building sits on the southeast corner of Main and 7th, facing west.

Statement of Significance: This building was constructed in 1920 after the Methodist Church on this site burned in 1919. The contract for the single story, hollow clay tile building went to Hopkins and Andrews of Portland. The first tenant (the church continued to own the property for several years) was the Price Brothers Store. According to the city directories, the CC Store occupied the space in the 1940s. An article in the Oregon City Enterprise on September 19, 1948 indicated that the CC Store remodeling project was near completion and when re-opened would be known as Cochran's. A second article two days later reported that a fire had caused $50,000 damage, delaying the re-opening of the store. There was no listing at this address in the 1953 directory. The building has since been remodeled further. At the time of the 1983 survey, Phillip's Apparel was located at 624 and a restaurant, called Harry's Mustache, was located at 622. At the present time, Bridgeview Beer and Wine Supply occupies the 624 portion of the building and the Loud Music Co. occupies the 622 storefront. Because the building has been so substantially altered, it no longer conveys its historic appearance and would be considered ineligible as a contributing resource in a historic district.
