718 Main Street - Star Theater

This one-story, brick building has been substantially altered. Its recessed entrance, completely remodeled, now has two modern metal and glass doors and fixed metal display windows. The arched entry has been removed and the top of the recess lowered. The parapet wall, with its stepped central section, has been stuccoed and painted with signage for the current business. The corner pilasters have been covered with ceramic tile on the lower portion and stucco painted on the upper portions. A small rigid project canopy extended above the storefronts.

Statement of Significance: The Star Theater building was constructed in c.1912 and opened as a movie theater in 1913. The building was owned by the Phillip Rods family, but the theater, which seated 300, was operated by William A. Long. During its heyday, the theater ran two shows each night with musical accompaniment provided by pianist, and sometimes a drummer, for the silent pictures. Terry Miller, the pianist hired by Long, eventually married one of Long's daughters. Long, who worked at the mills after arriving in Oregon City, got involved in the movie business after hurting his back. In 1920, he built a second theater, the Liberty Theatre, also on Main Street. Due to irretrievable loss of historic integrity, this building is not eligible as a contributing resource in the historic downtown.
