916 Main Street - Hopp's Building

This is a simple, rectangular building of slightly irregular form. The rear portion of the building is slightly narrow, creating a stepped effect at the rear of the building. The front (west) facade has square concrete blocks above the display windows which stretch the full width of the building. A centered entrance is recessed and the windows flanking the entrance are canted rather than squared off. The kickplates are veneered with a synthetic stone material. A sign board, made of vertically placed wood slats, projects slightly from the building above the storefront and wraps around the corners of the building. Corner pilasters the width of the concrete block extend to the top of the parapet wall and are topped by simple concrete block caps. There are two side entrances on the south elevation, providing access to the workshop areas at the rear of the building.

Statement of Significance: This has been the site of the Hopp's shop for more than half a century. The Frank Hopp and Sons Shoe Repair and Sporting Goods Store was listed at this address in the 1947 directory. Although the sporting goods portion of the business has changed to upholstery, the Hopp's still own and operate a shoe repair business in this building. Their original building, however, is no longer standing. The front 85 feet of this building were constructed in 1971 to replace an earlier building; the back 35 feet were constructed in 1957 as an addition to the earlier building. Because this building is not historic, it is not eligible as a contributing resource in a historic district.
