It is the duty of the Property and Evidence Unit to maintain the integrity and security of evidence and to provide the highest level of service that resources allow to members of the police department and the public.

The Unit is responsible for

• storing and safeguarding evidence, found property, relinquished property, and property for safekeeping;
• assisting in processing major crime scenes when requested, including the gathering, processing, storage and retrieval of evidence;
• facilitating requests for film processing;
• fingerprinting of items when requested;
• arranging for viewing of property;
• maintenance of records relating to property;
• working with the contracted auctioneer; and
• otherwise disposing of property as appropriate.

The Property Unit will need to have received a release from the appropriate court for any and all property that has been held as evidence for a Court proceeding.

Per state law, found property is held for 90 days and then disposed of or sent to auction. Unclaimed property is deemed abandoned property and will also be disposed of or auctioned according to state law.
