Oregon Hands Free Law

In July 28, 2009 Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski signed the Cell Phone hands Free legislation and the law went into effect january 1, 2010. The law calls for "primary enforcement", which means law enforcement officers may pull over motorists solely for violating the hands free law.

The basic principle of the "Hands Free Law" is as of January 1, 2010 Oregon has outlawed the use of handheld cell phones for all drivers. Cell phones with hands-free attachments are allowed ONLY for drivers over 18 years of age. TEXTING IS BANNED FOR ALL DRIVERS.

Drivers under the age of 18 with learner's permit or intermediate licenses are prohibited from using cell phones (even if they are using a hands free device) or texting while driving.

Within the city limits of Oregon City the fine for violating the hands free law is $250.00. It should be noted that operators of Emergency vehicles in the official capacity of his or her job are exempt from the hands free law.
