Safety Patrol Picnic
The Oregon City Police Department will be hosting the 61st Annual Safety Patrol Picnic at Oaks Park, in May 2010 from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM.
Stan Orzy who was a police officer with the Oregon City Police Department started this tradition back in 1948 when he was hired as an Officer with the department. He started out with “Small Stuff – taking the crossing guards swimming and skating.” The picnic gradually grew into an organized affair for the student safety patrol crossing guards from all around the County as well as from small programs in neighboring counties. The picnic was originally held at the amusement park in Janzen Beach; when that park closed the picnic moved to Oaks Park and has been held there every year since during the month of May.
Members of the Oregon City Elks Club #1189 volunteer their Saturday every year to serve the crossing guards their lunch after two hours of free midway rides. Lunch consists of Hot Dogs, Soft Drinks and Ice Cream! The Oregon City Police Department provides raffle prizes after lunch.
Participating schools: Gaffney Lane, John McLoughlin, Mt. Pleasant, King from the Oregon City School District. Ardenwald, Bilquist, Oak Grove, Riverside, View Acres and Wichita from Milwaukie, Lynch Meadows, Lynch View from Portland. Otto H.H. Petersen, Scappoose. Washington from Vernonia.
Members of the Oregon City Police Department are also invited to attend the event as well with their family members.
