Highway 213 Jughandle Project, Night-Time Pile Driving Completed - Day-Time Pile Driving to Begin

Night-Time Pile Driving Completed:
-
The City's contractor for the Jughandle Project has completed a series of noise producing night-work activities for the new Highway 213 bridge near the I-205 interchange. The new Highway 213 bridge will serve as an overpass to a realigned Washington Street.
-
The completed work includes the installation of 32 permanent steel piles under the existing Highway 213 travel lanes. These piles will provide the support for the new Highway 213 bridge.
-
The City of Oregon City's contractor for the Jughandle Project has begun night work including noise producing activities on the new Highway 213 bridge near the I-205 interchange. In order to minimize disruptions to daytime travel along Highway 213, night work is required during the partial closure of existing lanes of Highway 213 between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Special efforts are being made to muffle noise by wrapping equipment with insulating material.
Day-Time Pile Driving Starting:
-
The City’s contractor is scheduled to begin installation of 42 temporary steel piles during the day-time along the west side of Highway 213 between the Metro South Transfer Station and Washington Street.
-
The new bridge will be constructed on the temporary piles before the bridge is hydraulically moved to its permanent location in Highway 213 just south of the existing railroad bridge.
-
Day-time pile driving is anticipated to occur between October 31 and November 11, Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.
-
Noise produced during the day-time pile driving operations will be similar to the noise that was created during the night-time pile driving activities.
-
The following are some noise masking steps that can be taken for people that are bothered by the noise within their home:
o Ear Plugs.
o Playing a CD with white noise or other nature sounds.
o Running a fan.
o Tuning a radio or TV to the sound of static.

The Jughandle Project is the first phase of a transportation improvement plan for Highway 213 between the Interstate 205 interchange and Redland Road in Oregon City. Currently, approximately 65,000 trips are made daily on Highway 213 immediately south of the Interstate 205 interchange and stop-and-go conditions routinely delay travelers during commuter rush hours. The City of Oregon City, in partnership with the Oregon Department of Transportation, is making improvements in this area to reduce congestion, enhance safety, and increase capacity to accommodate current traffic demands and future growth. The Jughandle Project is in the process of constructing improvements to Highway 213, Washington Street, Clackamas River Drive, and Redland Road with a $22 million allocation from the 2009 Oregon Legislature’s Jobs and Transportation Act. A second phase of improvements to Highway 213 is planned to add a third northbound and southbound lane to the section of Highway 213 from just south of Redland Road to Washington Street.
