214 Jerome Street - Fred & Carrie Freeman Residence c.1915

Statement of Significance: This house was built for Fred Freeman and his wife, Carrie, when they were married, by his father, William Freeman (see 216 Jerome Street). Fred was born in Nebraska in 1888, and arrived in Oregon City with his parents, William and Louisa Freeman at the age of 5 in 1892. As a young man, he was a topper for a logging camp in the Oregon City area, and while his children were still young, played football and baseball for Oregon City against neighboring towns. Later he logged for Crown-Willamette Paper Company, and then became a millwright for the firm, commuting to the company, as did many of his neighbors, by rowing a boat across the Willamette River, docking and then
