917 4th Avenue - Frederick Rankel Residence 1885
Statement of Significance: Frederick Rakel was an employee of the Oregon City Woolen Mills. He was a native of Hanover, Germany, and arrived in the United States in 1876 at the age of 32. His wife, Dora, was born in Brunswick in 1854 and married Rakel just prior to their emigration to this country. They had six children. Fred Rakel also owned 104 Apperson Street and 609 S. McLoughlin Blvd. This house was the Rakel family home for many years, purchased from William Reinhardt in the mid-1880s. The Rakel family donated the land. The house is significant for its age and its association with the Rakel family.
