Lifeguard Certification

Wednesday, January 28: 5:30pm-8:30pm

Friday, January 30: 5:30pm-8:30pm

Saturday, January  31: 11:00am-7:00pm 

Sunday, February 1: 11:00am-7:00pm

Participants must attend all scheduled on-site classes in the session.


The registration deadline is approximately one week before the start of each session to allow adequate time to complete the required online coursework and reading material.

All classes require online work that amounts to 7 hours of work prior to the first day of class as well as the responsibility of reading the lifeguard manual prior to the start of class. The lifeguard manual can be purchased through the Red Cross. 

To Register

The instructor lead portion of the lifeguard certification class will be broken down into 4 sections:

  • Prerequisite 1: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest: • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed) • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both
  • Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed). • Submerge to a depth of 7 - 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Note: If the Lifeguarding course includes training for the Waterfront Skills mod
  • Practice: take what you've learned from the videos and apply it in drills, scenarios, and games to demonstrate ability to do all required rescues.
  • Final Exam: Take the "Lifeguard Written Exam". Students must pass with an 80% or higher. Complete the required water and CPR skills in a final testing environment.

Additional Information

  • Lifeguard training participants must attend all scheduled classes. Total time between the online work, in person work, and at home work, can amount to 30 or so hours. 
  • Bring a swimsuit, towel, snacks, and your lifeguard manual that you can purchase through the Red Cross.
