As people prepare to do their seasonal shopping, Oregon City’s Economic Development Department is reminding residents of the benefits of shopping locally.

The City’s Economic Development team is tasked with growing the economy. Working to bring new businesses, and new dollars, to the community is one part of that process many may be familiar with, but it’s also about creating an environment that supports those businesses. One way to achieve that is by keeping our dollars here.

“There are more than 1400 businesses registered in Oregon City that identify as a small business, meaning 25 or fewer employees,” said Economic Development Manager James Graham. “That’s a lot of jobs, many of which are filled by our neighbors,” he said.

Oregon City Mayor Denyse McGriff agreed, saying Oregon City's strong sense of community is most visible during the holiday shopping season. "Oregon City has always been a close knit community whose residents help each other. Shopping at local businesses keeps your money local, supporting your friends and neighbors," she said.

Lined with local restaurants and retailers, Oregon City’s Main St. has become known in the region as a popular destination for people looking for the authentic, locally owned experience. During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, parking is free to encourage people to spend time and money there.

Downtown Oregon City Association Executive Director Julianna Allen said the impact of every dollar spent during not just during this season but year-round is magnified. “Small business owners are the ones creating welcoming spaces, building the vision of what the community wants to see, and supporting local families with jobs. We can all make an impact by choosing where to spend our dollars. Every purchase in a small business is appreciated,” she said.

Graham said no matter where the Oregon City business is located, the money stays in the community, and those benefits have a cumulative effect.

“Every dollar spent stays here and can then be used at another local business. That one dollar quickly becomes several more, having that positive economic impact on business owners and staff alike,” he said. “By focusing more of our shopping efforts locally, we can make a big difference in a small business.”
