Diverse Books 2019

Finding Diverse Books for Kids & Teens 2019

Welcome! The information on this page was created by Barratt Miller, our Youth Services Librarian, for the Oregon City School District Equity Conference, held on February 15, 2019 at Oregon City High School.

While it was designed to be used by K through 12 educators, this information will also be helpful to anyone who's trying to find diverse books for and about kids and teens.

Presentation

View Presentation (PDF).

In the slideshow, you'll find:

  • Statistics about diversity in the Oregon City School District
  • Statistics and articles about diversity in the U.S. publishing industry
  • 4 recommended book titles, book award lists, blogs, school district staff specialists, and other resources highlighting 13 different identities
  • Information about using the public library as an educator, using the public library as a community member, and using the school library

From the Table of Contents on slide 2, use the blue underlined text to navigate to any slide in the presentation. Within the presentation, select any blue underlined text to visit website and online articles. And every book cover is a link that takes you right to the Libraries in Clackamas County (LINCC) library catalog!

Book Lists

Want to skip right to the book lists? We've made easy-to-print PDFs by grade range, by language, and by identity (Citizenship Status; Disabilities; Gender Identity and Sexuality; Income Inequality; African Americans; Asian Americans; Latinx Americans; Native Americans; Christians; Jews; Muslims; and Intersectionality).

In all book lists, select blue underlined text to go right to the LINCC library catalog! Spanish language editions and books that depict kids with multiple identities are noted in the grade level and identity lists.
