515 High Street

ARTHUR C. AND SADIE HOWLAND HOUSE -- (Previously 512-512 1/2, 513 High Street) Statement of Significance: Arthur Howland was the partner of S.O. Dillman in the real estate and insurance business of Dillman and Howland, located for many years at 8th and Main Streets. Mr. Howland was born in Massachusetts. He came to Oregon in 1891, when he was 18 years old. Mr. Howland married Sedonia Chase, daughter of James and Sarah Chase. Sadie Howland taught school at both Canemah and Oregon City's Atkinson School.

The large bungalow at 515 High Street was built in 1914. The building is essentially square, with two projections for porches and one for the main entry. The house has a gabled roof with a shed roofed dormer, possibly an early addition. The porch facing High Street has a hipped roof and exposed rafter tails. The windows on this porch are 9/1 grids. The other windows of the house 1/1 wood double-hung. Exterior cladding is wood bevel siding. Decorative features include eave brackets and exposed rafter tails.
