EUGENE ROBERTS HOUSE -- Statement of Significance: In 1901, this lot was sold to Eugene Roberts, who built the present house, which is dated c. 1905. Roberts was born in Salem in 1864 and moved to Oregon City when he was eight years old. After working at the woolen mills, he was employed as a timekeeper at the paper mills. He and his wife Lucy were active members of the Church of Christ. In 1942, the property was sold to an assumed relative, George Arthur Roberts. Roberts was a clerk for the County Assessor's office. Four years later, the property was sold to Arthur and Maud Babcock. Mr. Babcock, who worked for HP & P Co. and later at Pub. Paper Co., transferred the house in 1959 to James Elvin Duncan, a logger. He occupied the house with his wife Mary until its sale in 1967.

This 1-1/2 story vernacular style house has a steep gable roof with a shed roof extension to the south, all covered in composition shingles. The house sits on a board-formed concrete foundation with a wood skirt. The main part of the house has a simple square plan, but several additions have been added to the back. The house is clad in channel drop siding and has decorative brackets, rake boards, rake moldings, and cornice moldings. The windows are primarily 1/1 wood double-hung with wide wood trim and hoods. The first-floor picture window on the front elevation is a replacement. The front door has matching trim and a hood. A large porch runs the length of the front elevation and is covered by a hip roof. It has simple wood columns and a balustrade. Two additions have been added to the back of the house. There is a garage at the end of the additions to southeast.

This property is a locally designated historic site located within the McLoughlin Conservation District. Contact ocplanning@orcity.org for more information.
