MIFFLIN SHANER HOUSE -- Statement of Significance: Mifflin Shaner bought the property from SB Califf in 1889 and probably constructed the house around 1892. Shaner was a lab worker at WP & P Co and was living in the house in 1897. Shaner sold to Mrs. A.A. Wilcox at the turn of the century. Anna Dickerson sold the house in 1908 to Frank and Anna Rotter who owned and lived in the house until 1947. The house changed hands twice in that year, from Rotter to Louise Murphy to Ferdinand Haas. Haas sold in 1950 to Frank Serne and his estate sold to Percival & Earl and agents in 1963. Occupants of the house have included David (a longshoreman) and Cosette Elliot in the early 1950s and William and Geraldine Skinner in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
This 1-1/2 story wing and gable house sits high above the road. The front gable has a rake board and corner boards. There is a belt course above the window. The front porch consists of wooden risers running up to recessed front entrance on the south end and a three-sided bay on the north end of the east elevation. The bay corner is chamfered and holds a wooden pendant. The front window of the bay has a stained glass top sash. A water table and cap run around the perimeter of the building. Vertical siding runs under the watertable; horizontal drop channel covers the rest of the house. The elevation of the wing also has a porch with wooden steps and a plain wooden banister and another entrance. Windows are one over one double-hung. The back of the house has an enclosed shed roof area and a new deck.
