A.J. AND VIRGINIA MUIR HOUSE -- Statement of Significance: The construction of this residence has been credited to A.J. and Virginia Muir. By 1900, Mr. Muir, who was born in 1835 in Connecticut, was a teamster and living in this house with his wife and six of his nine children. Two of their sons, Charles and Chester, operated Muir Bros. Grocers at the corner of 7th and Center.
This front gabled house has several entrances and serves as multi-resident dwelling. The foundation is screened so it is not visible and undetermined. The roof has a boxed soffit, rake board and drake molding. The entire front elevation is covered with a painted, rolled composition paper covering to simulate brickwork. The front elevation is symmetrical with two doors, each covered by front gabled hoods. The hoods feature a flared barge board and a shallow arch underneath. The hoods are upheld by decorative brackets. The doors have a single pane on the top half and feature full entablature above and carving below. The north elevation has a third entrance at hipped roof porch that sites on a concrete slab with concrete steps. A round window punctuates the north side shed roof addition. The door has four panes and there is a single 6/1 fixed picture window. The north elevation also has a gable dormer. There are windows in the basement There is a c.1920 garage with a gable roof on the north side to the rear of the house.
